Boonton Township, NJ

All About Boonton Township

Boonton Township is a pastoral community comprised of approximately 8 square miles nestled among the rolling hills and fields of the Rockaway Valley in north central Morris County. The Township has managed to preserve much of its natural character and rural charm despite development pressure from neighboring municipalities, which today makes Boonton Township one of the more desirable communities in Morris County.

Boonton Township’s recorded history began about 1710 when William Saget Penn, the Quaker land speculator, located in the northern valley his Lot No. 48, which contained by actual survey 1,430 prime field and woodland acres. The first settler of proper record was Frederick DeMouth of French Huguenot extraction, and by 1758, his Rockaway Valley plantation within the Penn Lot comprised 672 acres. The Township was incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 11, 1867

Roads were early in the making. McCaffrey Lane, the oldest recorded thoroughfare in the area, was built in 1767 by Samuel Ogden of the Great Boonton Tract. In 1822, North Main Street was “cut” along the proposed Morris Canal route. In 1824, the Morris Canal and Banking Company was chartered with John Scott of Powerville, an important commissioner. Lot Numbers 9, 10, and 11 were constructed in newly named Powerville. The Powerville Hotel, still standing, was built near Lot Number 11 to accommodate both canal and transient trade. It later gained fame as a pre-American Civil War Underground Railroad station

Boonton Township is governed under the Township form of New Jersey municipal government. The government consists of a 5-member Township Committee elected at-large in partisan elections to serve 3-year terms on a staggered basis, with one or two seats coming up for election each year. The Mayor and Deputy Mayor are selected by the Township Committee from among its members.

The Boonton Township School District serves students in public school for kindergarten through 8th grade. For grades 9 through 12, public school students attend Mountain Lakes High School, in Mountain Lakes, as part of a sending/receiving relationship agreement in place with the Mountain Lakes School District.

Denville

Denville is a picturesque community known as “The Hub of Morris County,” a very fitting description for a township located in the heart of one of New Jersey’s wealthiest locales. Denville has preserved much of its natural beauty that formed its original appeal: sparkling lakes, ponds, streams, and rustic views of meadows and rolling hills, combined to form one of the area’s most desirable residential locations.

Cedar Lake

Cedar Lake was originally a small, natural, spring-fed body of water called Cranberry Lake and, later, Silver Lake. In its early days, the lake was known for its abundant silver moss, used to pack ice which was harvested, sold and shipped to nearby metropolitan areas. The lake was eventually dammed and its size increased to improve the ice harvesting. In 1906, Cedar Lake was purchased by Mr. M. W. Raynes and George B. Wright under their company Cedar Lake Park, Inc.
